Chapter 2

Ike's point of view.

Man I can't believe it!  Katie is moving back to Michigan.  She and I have

been friends since she moved here 3 years ago.  Lately I've wanted us to be

more though.  I was going to ask her out tonight but when she told me she

was moving I just couldn't do it.  I don't want to start something with her.

Long distance relationships never last.

I let myself into the house then go up to the room that I share with Tay and

Zac.  Zac is spending the night at a friend's house.  Tay is sitting on his bunk

writing in his journal.  He looks up and sees my sad face.

"How'd it go?" Tay asks.

"Terrible"  I reply.  "She got accepted into the University of Michigan."

"Oh man Ike, I'm sorry.  Well, you still have a few weeks to go out with her

before we go on tour. She'll also be home for breaks and you could go there and

visit her.  There's also the phone and e-mail."  Tay says.

"Long distance relationships never work out."  I say dejectedly.

"They do if you work really hard at it and if you were meant to be with that

person."  Tay says.

"Maybe you're right Tay."  I admit.  I change clothes and jump up to my bunk.

"I know I am"  Tay says and turns out the lights.

I think about how good she looked in that pink dress.  It brought out the red in

her hair and hazel in her eyes.  I also laugh at those stupid slippers. She smelled

good too.  Then I remember how good it felt to dance with her.  I was surprised

that I had asked her to do that but now I'm glad I did.  I fall asleep vowing that I

would ask her out tomorrow.

The next day I get up, take a shower, and get dressed.  Then I go outside.

I see Katie getting ready to get into her parent's car.  She is wearing a white

polo shirt that has "lifeguard" in red on it, red shorts with "lifeguard" in white on

it, and white flip flops.   I could also see parts of her red bathing suit

underneath.  She is carrying her red duffel bag and small backpack purse.  She

works part-time as a lifeguard at a public pool about 2 miles from our houses.

    "Hi Katie"  I say.

    "Hey Ike"

"Can I ask you something before you go off to work?" I ask.

    "Sure what is it Ike?"

I take a deep breath and then say "Would you like to go to a dinner and then

a movie next Friday?"

"I'd love to Ike. What brought this on?"

I start looking down at my feet and say "Well, I was hoping we could be

more than just friends even though you are moving to Michigan"

"Oh, well I want to be more than just friends too Ike. I'm willing to work

hard at it."  she says and smiles.

"Great!  I call you on Thursday and we'll make plans."

    "Ok"  she says.

Then she gets into her parent's car and drives off.  I go back inside my house

with the biggest, most stupid grin on my face.

Kaitlyn's point of view.

After I talk to Ike I get into my parent's car and drive off.  When Ike came to

talk to me I was relieved.  I also wondered what he wanted to talk to me

about.  I can't believe Ike asked me out on a date!  How am I going to make it

until Friday?
